Housing America hosted a game night for the seniors and disabled persons living in Austin, Texas’ Lakeside Apartments during the 2015 NAHRO Summer Conference on July 30. More than 40 residents enjoyed snacks, prizes and several rounds of Bingo during the event.
"The residents were welcoming and excited, and had so much fun,” says Clif Martin, chair of Housing America. “I had a great time visiting their community and calling Bingo for them. I certainly won't quit my day job, but being a good Bingo caller is harder than it looks!"
"The game night hosted by Housing America and NAHRO was a huge hit with the Lakeside residents,” says Eileen Schrandt, director of community development for the Housing Authority of the City of Austin. “From the enthusiasm of the Bingo caller and the wonderful snacks and prizes, to the selfies taken with the volunteers for the resident newsletter, the residents haven't stopped talking about the event and how much fun it was! More than one mentioned how honored they were that important housing advocates wanted to spend their evening in fellowship with them."
NAHRO’s Housing America campaign aims to raise national awareness of the need for and importance of safe, quality, affordable housing through education, advocacy, and empowerment. Some of the many ways in which the campaign moves its mission forward include volunteer events such as this game night.
